Exhibition Statement

This Exhibition is based on a structure of Clever Hans, one of the story of Grimm's Fairy Tales. In the story, conversations and behaviors are regulated by the structure of sentences. Even though they become illogical and nonsense the characters do not question about them and the story continues because of the structure, which the characters in the story would never be able to see. The criterion varies depending on which character the reader focus on: Hans is clever/stupid, Gretel keeps give things to Hans and Mother always forgets what Hans did. I applied this trick to curating an exhibition and the process of making an exhibition so that all participating artists could interpret the show by their own criterion. I did not select all of the participating artists. I selected one artist and the selected artist selected another artist and so on. The participating artists are fixed when the chain of selection ends. Also, a video work that shows interviews with each artist will be displayed at the show. In the video, the interviewer (Kobayashi) asks artists about themes of their artistic practice. The viewers of this exhibition may be able to take a role of this show by relating with works of art asking "Give me something" or "You'll do better next time" or "You brought something good?" just like the readers of Clever Hans.
